Borgund Stave Church in Laerdal municipality in Sogn was built just before 1150 and was dedicated to the Apostle St. Andrew. It is one of the most well preserved stave churches in the world. It has not been added to or rebuilt since it was new. The pulpit is from the last period of the 1500’s and the altar-piece is from 1620. Best of all, it is made almost entirely of cedar.

Located on the church walls are several runic inscriptions. Two of them date back to the middle of the 1100’s. They are as follows: "Tor wrote these runes in the evening at the St. Olav’s Mass" and "Ave Maria"
